Mission 025 – The Mission? Breaking Down an Incredible Week
WOW…that’s about all I can say at this very moment in time. WOW.
The world of wrestling just experienced one of its all-around greatest weeks ever, and we are going to quickly examine the top ten reasons as to why that is the case!
TEN. Goldberg, Hart, and a Hospital Bed
I have to say it once again that this saga between these aging legends is one of the best things going on right now in the business, and honestly, no one presents legends quite like WWE. After all, the company is a direct descendant of the WWF and LWF. With Goldberg and Hart stealing the show on consecutive appearances, you have to strap in and get ready for a comedic ride. The latest installment may have been the best to date as Goldberg attacked Hart in the hospital. Looking like a crazy action scene. Pure gold!
NINE. Murrey Fires his Billy
I know that I was hard on the introduction of Baby Billy into Murrey’s escapades, but this most recent use of the guy had me cracking up. I may have no clue as to who this guy is, but the moment was one of the best for WWE this week as Murrey fired this mystery guy and then proceeded to receive a tongue lashing from him. On a side note, I am a tad depressed that Pete has taken a dark turn as of late. Poor Nikki! Get out while you can!!
EIGHT. Toni Storm and Becky Drama
Just before Becky debuted in a banger of a match with Willow, her entrance was cut short by the otherwise absent Knockout’s Champion, Toni Storm. Toni had to attend a TCM event, but she sent her regards and promised to be present next week for her first encounter ever with The Man! Toni jumps from one obsession to the next like she’s a flea in a pet shop, and her new boo – the former two-time Women’s Champion, Miss Lynch – could be the obstacle that she can’t climb over. Excited to see what happens this week when they meet!
SEVEN. Melo and Page Tear it Down
Over in NXT, the North American Champion, Carmelo Hayes, and Ethan Page gave us a hellacious bout to talk about for ages to come. I will likely become a broken record in this season and beyond for this, but it needs to be repeatedly highlighted that Hayes and Page are the future of this business. Hayes has multiple championships under his wing now, from the Premier Championship to the North American Championship, and Page is likely to follow in those footsteps…very closely behind. A damn good match, feud, and preview of what’s to come!
SIX. Attractive Champions
Look, I knew that Teo and Attitude were going to be portrayed like a big deal in AEW after they came back to BWM Inc. with this year’s draft. Attitude spent 6 years away, and hadn’t wrestled in a BWM Inc. ring since his brief stint in NEW during the Fifth Era, while Teo hadn’t been with the company since he was drafted to PWI in 2011; with his last BWM Inc. match happening in ECW in 2010. So, to say that they would receive a hero’s welcome was a massive understatement! But, them going over the Gunns caught me pleasantly by surprise. So ready for this ride to come!
FIVE. Ventura Turns Down The Flex Squad
Jesse Ventura is just as relevant now as he had been in the first set of eras of this industry’s history. The original superstar conquered the new brand’s world title in the blink of an eye, and now he rejects the Flex Squad to boot. Part of me was hoping he would join the muscle group, but after he rejected them and was attacked for it, I am looking forward to the aftermath. Making a monster like Ventura look sympathetic is no easy task, but Flex and the gang have a real chance to make it happen, and I am excited for it!
FOUR. High-Minded Interrogation
For a moment there, I was scared that we would have our hearts broken, and that Dynamite was going to have to convert into a tribute show. Thankfully, though, the drama shifted from thinking a member of the roster had passed and had laser-focused on the perceived betrayal of one man’s failure to leap to ULW. Riddle desperately trying to save face for not telling the group named after his love of a certain plant about what his plans were (to follow Niven to the League), was a fantastic way for AEW to start the show and for AEW to televise a comment about the so-called Jade Trade. This was fun, as usual. Great job guys!
THREE. Knight and Danielson Rule Monday Night
To end the night of in-ring action for AEW last week, LA Knight successfully defended his Television title against Bryan Danielson. While I never really believed that Knight was going to drop the belt so soon into his AEW run, I was on the edge of my seat for what these two guys were giving us: a match of the year candidate. Danielson is incapable of having a bad match, and Knight is not far behind. Excellent bout for a really fun title run!
TWO. WWE Champs Who Survive Again, and Those Who Didn’t
Back over in WWE, we see many of their champs surviving this week of action, while a few didn’t. Unfortunately, one of the title reigns in question came to an abrupt end when Chad Gable injured himself in his defense against Mystico. Get well, soon, Chad! I loved APA winning the tag gold, as they win their second tag titles this year alone! Naomi surviving the storm, the eradicator, and the Buff Barbie was admittedly not something that I saw coming, but I have to give it just praise! Finally, we have the world champions, John Cena and the Rock!
Cena’s list of defeated challengers is one that keeps growing, as it now includes one half of the first WWE champions, Damian Priest. For a moment, I was thinking that Cena was going to drop it to Priest, but I suppose he is still in the run of his life, so kudos to you Big John! With the Rock, I never doubted that he would retain for a second, but Cody was a damn good challenger, and the fact that Cody left us all with a veiled message that he is far from done with Rock left me giddy for the next phase of this feud!
ONE. All-Things Benny
You can’t fail with a Benny segment, and his involvement in one way or another was a major reason why this episode of Dynamite managed to more than survive the blockbuster show that was Independent Intentions (which included so much, such as Lesnar’s arrival and the Splidder footage)! Benny opened the show in the ring with a wide-ranging promo that addressed Jade Cargill, Mickey, Lenny, and more. That would have been good enough for me, but the saga continued!
A little later into the show, we get Executioner openly monologuing about his journey that forced him to betray Sami and join Benny back in May. He was visibly torn still to this date about the decision, and then he was confronted by the BWM Inc. Postal Worker, Brodie Lee. I sincerely wonder where this one is going.
But, as Billy Mayes used to say, wait there’s more! The end of the show – which interestingly coincided with ULW’s Splidder footage – saw Sami finally watching that tape that was given to him by the Harlem Turtles. Apparently, the scene took place the day before the Draft, but it mysteriously included footage of Benny delivering his speech at the Draft! Spooky shit, and something that I am all-in for!
BroDown ShowDown
Now, while I will have to skip predictions for what WWE and AEW are going to do this week, I will offer a quick preview for what’s on tap tonight in ULW. We were supposed to have the night off, but Vince Russo got the go-ahead from Lenny to launch his very own annual special tonight!
Asuka versus Chyna
The battle of the single-name women comes as Asuka seeks vengeance for Chyna costing her the tie-breaker win last week over Sasha. The Ninth Wonder of the World is as big and muscular as most of the men in that locker room, so I sincerely do worry for the Empress of Tomorrow! Either way, the showdown starts with these two…TONIGHT!
Falls Count Anywhere, to determine who challenges next for the Undisputed Title: Bray Wyatt versus Kevin Owens
A feud that stems – off and on – back a few years to when Kevin Owens cost the Fiend a shot at the PWI championship. Now, Bray has been cost gold once again by Owens and has made seeking out revenge his number one priority, but Owens is not someone who scares easily. He wants his shot at Jericho, and he will literally walk through hell if that is what it takes to get there! A great way to cap ULW’s surprise night of action, and I am soooo ready for it! Let’s Go!
Until our next Quest, this has been Johnny with yet another mission!
